Hiring a caravan, motorhome, campervan or RV to visit Perisher gives you the ultimate flexibility to chase the snow in winter or explore the rooftop of Australia in summer. You can base yourself in the snow gums at Sawpit Creek, avoid the icy mountain roads by taking the Skitube, and return to your cosy, heated van after a big day on the slopes.
)
The Kosciuszko Road from Jindabyne to Perisher is the gateway to the high country, offering glimpses of the Snowy River and rugged granite tors. For a stunning day trip, take your motorhome onto the Alpine Way towards Khancoban; this iconic touring route winds through tall mountain forests and offers spectacular views of the Main Range’s western fall. In summer, you can drive past Perisher all the way to Charlotte Pass to see the peaks of the main range without the snow cover.
)
Perisher is situated within the majestic Kosciuszko National Park, home to twisted snow gums that look incredible under a blanket of white or amongst summer wildflowers. In the warmer months, park your RV and take the walk to Porcupine Rocks for a brilliant view over the Thredbo Valley, or tackle the summit walk to Mount Kosciuszko to stand on the highest point on the continent.
)
Legend has it the area was named when grazier James Spencer, caught in a blizzard, exclaimed "This is truly a perisher!" You can explore the region’s deep indigenous history—the Monero-Ngarigo people have gathered here for thousands of years for bogong moth feasting. For a look at recent history, the story of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme is etched into the landscape and local towns.
)
On your way up or down the mountain, stop at the Wildbrumby Distillery in the Thredbo Valley to taste authentic schnapps made from local fruit—perfect for a chilly evening in the van. Up in the village, The Man from Snowy River Hotel offers a classic alpine pub atmosphere where you can grab a hot chocolate or a cold beer while recounting the day's runs.
)
In winter, Perisher is the largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere, offering endless runs for skiing and boarding across four resort areas. Summer transforms the slopes into a hiker's paradise; you can explore the pristine trails around Blue Cow or mountain bike through the rugged terrain.
)
For the best RV experience in winter, park your motorhome at the Bullocks Flat Skitube Terminal (where overnight parking is free) and catch the train up to the resort, avoiding the need for chains on the steep ascent. For a powered base, Sawpit Creek (Kosciuszko Tourist Park) is the closest campground to the snow, offering dedicated motorhome sites and fire pits to keep you toasty.
How much does Campervan, Caravan, Motorhome & RV hire near Perisher cost?
Prices vary depending on the vehicle's age, size, and features. On Camplify, you can find options from local owners ranging from budget-friendly campers for around $80 per night to luxurious, self-contained motorhomes from $350+ per night.
When is the best time to visit Perisher for a road trip?
The winter ski season (June to September) is the most popular, but you must be prepared for cold weather. Summer (December to February) is fantastic for hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the national park in your RV.
What licence do I need to hire a campervan or motorhome?
For most campervans, motorhomes, and RVs (under 4.5 tonnes GVM), you only need a standard car licence. If you're hiring a caravan, you'll also need a tow-capable vehicle and to check its towing capacity.
Can I park my motorhome or caravan overnight at Perisher?
No. Overnight camping or sleeping in vehicles is not permitted in the Perisher, Smiggin Holes, or Guthega car parks during the winter season. You must set up your van at a designated holiday park or campground in Jindabyne.
Do I need to book caravan parks in Jindabyne in advance?
Yes, absolutely. Jindabyne is the main hub for the ski fields and its holiday parks book out months in advance for the entire winter ski season. Summer is also busy. Booking ahead is essential.
Are there pet-friendly hire options for visiting Perisher?
Yes, many local owners on Camplify list their vans as pet-friendly. However, please note that pets (including dogs) are strictly not permitted anywhere inside Kosciuszko National Park, which includes Perisher, Thredbo, and the Skitube.
