This is what an Australian campervan trip actually looks like. Someone's weekend home, with the bedding they chose, the kitchen broken in, route notes in the glovebox, parked at a coastal lookout you found yourself. Not a fleet box with HIRE ME on the side.
Camplify is the Australian platform where owners hire out their vans when they're not using them. Same campervan and RV rental Australia uses for its bucket-list trips, with the character a depot fleet can't carry. More than 100,000 travellers since 2015.
A campervan trip in Australia is often a once-in-a-lifetime trip; the worry scales with the cost. These are the four things first-time international hirers ask us about, answered upfront.
Every Camplify booking includes 24/7 nationwide roadside assistance, covered by the standard booking fee. One nationwide number, day or night. The owner is reachable separately via Camplify messaging on the platform.
All fees (daily rate, the owner's service fee, any delivery, and the excess-reduction tier you pick) are itemised on the booking screen before you confirm. No counter-time upsells at pickup; no extra damage-cover counter to argue with.
Every booking requires Camplify's Accident Excess Reduction (AER). Risk Taker is the default; Happy Camper drops the excess further for a daily fee. AER covers damage to the RV and third-party property as long as you meet the owner's age and licence requirements (typically 25 plus, some owners 21 plus). AER doesn't replace personal travel cover; it covers the vehicle, not your trip.
You book and pay through Camplify, not the owner directly. The booking fee covers payment security, support, and the 24/7 roadside line. If anything looks wrong before the trip, our team can step in. Not a private classified.
Live listings from motorhome owners around the country. Tap any van to see the photos, the owner's profile, and what makes this rig different from the fleet vans run out of depots. Caravans are also available, typically delivered to your campsite by the owner. Open the full search.

The hotel chains end at the city limit. Most international visitors fly into Sydney or Melbourne, base themselves at an inner-city hotel, and ride the same buses as every other tourist. The country itself, the part you flew halfway around the world for, starts a few hours past the airport.
A campervan or motorhome puts the country in reach. Or, if you'd rather not drive every day: hire a car for the city days, book a delivered van at a coastal campsite or a national-park campground for the nature days, and let the owner bring it to you. The hotel works for the city. The van works for everywhere else.
)
When you hire a campervan from a Camplify owner, you also get the Australian who built it. Owners write route notes for the trip they did last year, mark the beach where they swim on the weekend, and tell you which caravan park has the good showers and which to skip. Some let you park overnight in their garden when you're passing through.
Australian campervan trips end up looking different from the guidebook routes because the people lending you the vans are the locals the guidebook writers ask. Message the owner on the Camplify app with a question on the road; they answer.

In Australia, delivery means delivered to where you're going. Beachfront caravan parks, national-park base camps, coastal headlands an hour past the last village. Fly to Sydney, hop a domestic flight or hire car to your spot, and the caravan's towed in, set up and waiting.
Think of it as a holiday rental in the wild. Real kitchen, real bed, real bathroom, dropped exactly where you want to wake up. Owners tow with their own car and typically charge A$1 to A$2 per kilometre delivery from their home base. Works particularly well for travellers who'd rather not drive on outback roads, families with young children, surfing or hiking base camps, and one- to three-week stays in one place.
See how a delivered caravan trip works)
Wildlife. Kangaroos at dawn and dusk are the real road hazard. Snakes? About two bite treatments a year nationally. Spiders make headlines, rarely your trip.
Distances. Australia is roughly the size of Europe or the contiguous US. Sydney to Melbourne is 9 hours of driving; Sydney to Cairns is 24. Pick a region and stay in it.
Sun. AU UV is properly different from home. A clear southern summer day will burn fair skin in 15 minutes. Factor 50, wide-brim hat, sunglasses. Slip Slop Slap.
Most international visitors don't pick up the van the morning after they land. Pick the pattern that fits your trip; ask the owner for anything bespoke.
Land in Sydney or Melbourne, two or three days in the city for the jet lag and the sights, then take handover when you're ready. Owners are flexible on dates.
Use the near-airport filter (special_place=airport) to find vans within 15 minutes of the gateway terminals. Many owners deliver to your hotel or directly to the terminal.
Fly into Sydney, road trip up the coast, fly home from Cairns. Either pay an owner for one-way collection, or fly internally and hire at the destination city.
)
A typical Camplify host is a Sydney northern-beaches couple in their late forties who hire out their compact van the eight months a year they're not using it. They've hosted international travellers every season for the past two years; she drops the van at the airport hotel herself so the morning starts easy, and she'll send you a message on the Camplify app whether the surf at Bondi is breaking or flat that morning before you head out.
Owner-listed vans come with the bedding the owner picked, the kettle that actually works, the fridge that fits a week of groceries, and the route notes from the trip they did last year. Owner messages run through Camplify so everything's on record when the satnav sends you down a track that doesn't exist.
Pick up from these popular cities and explore coastal roads, inland escapes, or outback tracks in your campervan. Or have a caravan delivered straight to your favourite campsite.

Can I do campervan hire Australia from overseas before I fly in?
Yes. The booking happens online, in your home country, weeks or months before the trip. You pay through Camplify; funds release to the owner only after handover. You don't need an Australian bank account, an Australian SIM, or any local paperwork to book or pay. Bring your home country licence and your passport at handover.
What if the van breaks down in the middle of nowhere?
Every Camplify booking includes 24/7 nationwide roadside assistance, covered by the booking fee. One number, day or night. The owner is reachable separately via Camplify messaging, and most arrange a like-for-like replacement van or a hotel night if the issue can't be fixed roadside. Mobile coverage is good along the East Coast and main highways (Telstra is the strongest network); a satellite messenger is worth carrying for the Red Centre.
How does the excess (deductible) actually work?
Camplify calls it Accident Excess Reduction (AER). Two tiers: Risk Taker (default, between A$0 and A$5,500 excess depending on the RV) and Happy Camper (between A$0 and A$500 excess, daily fee on top). If you damage the van during your hire, the excess is the maximum you'd owe; AER covers the rest of the damage to the RV and to third-party property. Picked once at booking, no upsell at handover. If you finish the trip without an incident, you don't pay the excess. AER doesn't replace personal travel cover; it covers the vehicle and third-party property, not your belongings or personal-injury liability.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
Depends on your country. UK, Irish, Canadian and US travellers don't need one for Camplify. German, Austrian, Swiss, Dutch, and Singaporean travellers should bring one (around A$20 to A$30 from your home auto club, takes 15 minutes). Always bring your home licence and passport. Each country page (linked above) has the exact rules.
Can I get the van delivered to a campsite or hotel?
Yes. This is one of the bigger differences between Camplify and depot-fleet hire. Australian owners regularly deliver to caravan parks, national-park campgrounds, beaches, hiking trail heads, and private properties. Owners typically charge A$1 to A$2 per kilometre delivery from their home base. Pickup at the end works the same way; they collect from wherever you are.
Where can I legally sleep overnight in a campervan?
Australia has 1,500 plus paid holiday parks at A$25 to A$60 per night with full hookups, thousands of free or low-cost national-park sites, and legal-overnight rest areas on highways. WikiCamps and CamperMate are the essential apps and work offline. Wild-camping rules vary by council; the apps mark legal spots.
What's included in Camplify's damage cover for international drivers?
Every booking requires Camplify's Accident Excess Reduction (AER), which covers damage to the RV and third-party property up to the excess you choose. AER eligibility is the same for international and Australian hirers: a current full unrestricted licence in the correct class, and the owner's age requirement (typically 25 plus, some owners 21 plus). Two tiers at booking: Risk Taker (default) and Happy Camper (lower excess, daily fee). AER doesn't replace personal travel cover: it doesn't cover personal belongings or personal-injury liability. We strongly recommend a separate travel-cover policy for those. 24/7 nationwide roadside assistance is included via the booking fee.
Can I pick up at the airport, or do a one-way trip between cities?
Yes to both. The near-airport filter (special_place=airport) shows vans within 15 minutes of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Cairns; many of those owners deliver direct to the terminal. For one-way (fly into Sydney, road trip to Cairns, fly home from Cairns), most owners agree a kilometre-based one-way fee; a few don't. Ask before booking. The simpler alternative is a domestic flight to your finish city and a local owner's van there.
When is the best time of year for an Australian road trip?
Summer somewhere every month. The southern half (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Tasmania, the Great Ocean Road, the wine regions) is best November through March. The tropical north (Cairns, the Reef, Darwin, the WA Coral Coast) is best May through September; January through March is wet season up there. April and October work almost anywhere. Pick the weeks you have free first, then pick the latitude that matches them.
How long should I plan for a meaningful Australian campervan trip?
Three weeks is the sweet spot for an East Coast loop or a Sydney-to-Adelaide run. Two weeks gives you a great Tasmania loop or Sydney-to-Brisbane. Less than a week works for a focused trip out of one city, like Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road. Australia is bigger than most international visitors expect; pace your distances. Five to six weeks gets you a full coast-to-coast crossing.
Is it really cheaper than depot-fleet rental Australia?
Often, but not always. Depot fleets price flat by build at roughly A$150 to A$300 per day plus airport surcharges plus excess-tier upsell at the counter. Owner-listed vans on Camplify are priced by individuals; some come in below the depot rate, some come in above for higher-spec builds. The bigger differences are the no-depot pickup, the delivery option, and the owner you can message in-app. Compare prices on the search page before you book.
Live listings from owners around the country. Two-berth conversions for couples, four-berth campervans for families, four-wheel-drive rigs for the Red Centre. Most are within 30 minutes of a major airport, many delivered. Open the full search.
