Renovating a van? Read these words of wisdom before you begin
)
Bought the van but not sure what to include in the build? Beginning a new van renovation project can be a little overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time, so we hit up a few of our experienced van renovators to request some words of wisdom. Keep reading to discover their must-haves, luxury touches and advice for planning (and completing) your first van renovation.
Erin and James, from Drifters Campervans
Having now renovated three vans, Erin and James have learned more than most about what works and what doesn’t. ‘Planning is essential if you want the renovation to be done right,’ says Erin. ‘It also helps keep things moving because you often can’t do one thing before you’ve finished another; the insulation before the walls, the walls before the wallpaper and paint, and so on.’

Erin also thinks it’s a good idea to try renting a van if you’re really serious about renovating one. ‘You need to do your research and look at how others have nailed the really boring stuff, like what handles they use. Or how the drawers pull out, or whether the bed pulls or flips out or is permanent. Like I said, you learn a little more every time; whether it’s what kind of material is going to last longer, what’s going to be a little more practical or what kind of storage is needed.’
Georgia, Joel and Terry the Transit
In terms of practical van recommendations, Georgia is all about investing in lithium batteries if your budget allows for it. ‘They’re so great for power, keep you running for days and are way lighter [than normal batteries],’ she says. She and Joel also installed a retractable bed in Terry to allow for an additional hang out space, which functions as a lounge room where they can work or read on rainy days. ‘You just have to think about the things you value and include them in your build,’ says Georgia. ‘Be patient with the process and enjoy it! And add some things to the van that are unique to you, so that you feel proud of your work.’

Dee and Casa the Coaster
For Dee, a coffee machine was always going to be a non-negotiable in case she decides to take Casa the Coaster on the road and far away from a decent coffee shop. ‘We also added a projector, which can be used inside Casa or set up outside,’ she says, ‘and wanted both plug-in power for campsites and solar panels for off-grid trips.’

Rocky and Dizzy Miss Lizzy
There are some luxuries Rocky can’t live without and watching his favourite football team play is one of them. ‘A TV is a cool thing to have,’ he says. ‘It’s not for everyone, but I love it when I’m camping and Liverpool FC are playing. I pop in my FireStick, hotspot off my phone and stream the game live.’ He also recommends doing your homework on dual battery systems, water pumps and lighting. ‘Get creative and don’t be afraid to try something different,’ he says.
Andrew and Queensie
‘My aim for Queensie was to make her appealing enough for my partner to join me,’ says Andrew. To reach this lofty goal, he was sure to include running water, both battery and solar power, a good fridge, comfortable seating, lots of ventilation, fly nets, heating and an external shower, along with clever storage solutions.
Andrew’s top tip? ‘Measure twice, cut once,’ he says. ‘I learned this one the hard way. And when you get started, make a good plan. If you have the time, patience and willingness to learn and problem solve, then just do it.’

Julia, Josh and Yotchi(s)
Julia and Josh are no strangers to luxury van conversions. They’ve renovated five vans now, and the most important thing, Julia says, ‘Is having clarity on what is a “must”, and the things you can’t live without, and building around those.’
‘Our signature feature is a queen bed that rolls out the back of the vans,’ says Julia. ‘It allows you to sleep outside and stargaze while creating an open, spacious lounge room. A media system and projector were things that we wanted to add for that little touch of luxury. And large windows, a sunroof and a dedicated space to work and eat.’
