Life on the road with Freestyle Kings Lance Russell

For part two of our Travel Around Australia with Boost Mobile series we caught up with Lance Russell, professional Freestyle Motocross Rider and Boost Mobile Athlete, to talk about all things motocross and life on the road.

The Freestyle kings are dominating the motocross industry. The world-renowned Australia Freestyle Motocross team is awesome, performing worldwide and gaining international and national presence for their productions, choreography, and state-of-the-art showmanship. Based in Sydney, the 18-strong team consists of some of the best riders in Australia and worldwide.

Lance has been riding full-time since 2009. Thanks to his skill and the opportunity his trusty dirt bike has presented, he has travelled the world. At 32 years old, this NSW local has been a long-term ambassador for Kawasaki Australia and has some epic career highlights under his belt. This 32-year-old knows a thing or two about bikes, travel, and the Aussie way of life.

We chatted about all things living on the road as a Freestyle King. Tell us a little about life on the road?

Life on the road feels like a pure adventure. One night we could be staying in luxury apartments prepping for our show, and the next, we will be tucked up in the van under our dirt bikes at a beachfront campsite. As you know, Australia is huge, so as a team, we spend a lot of time driving long distances across the country to our next show or competition.

Long-distance drives come with their perks. We see a whole heap of Australia moving around, and taking it all in from the passenger seat is pretty cool. Once you start travelling and getting used to life on the road, it becomes a sort of addiction, and you realise how much you are missing out when staying in one place all the time.

Do you have a top three travel essentials or must-haves?

Oh wow, it will be hard to break it down to just three! I’m very social media based, so these essentials lean to the tech-based side of my life. Firstly, you can't go without a phone charger, especially when wanting to stay connected on the road. I ensure I have a minimum 2.3ah in-car phone charger so that I can charge my devices super quickly. That is definitely a travel priority for me.

The next essential is the 240v inverter charger. I never have to search for a PowerPoint to charge my GoPro, laptop, or iPad, it's completely mobile, and I can plug into a standard in-car auxiliary charging point and go.

I wouldn't get far without being on Boost Mobile. I smash through data, so the 12-month recharge pack is essential. That gets you 280GB of data for $300. I never worry about service; I get it literally anywhere I go and even use that data hotspot through to my laptop. Essential to kick back and watch some shows to pass the time on the road.

****Any favourite remote locations you've come across while touring? **** We drive and stop at plenty of incredible spots here in Australia, but nothing gets me more excited than the East Coast beaches. I have made the most amazing memories camping in the van from Sydney through to the Gold Coast; there are some unreal locations on this coast. A firm pitstop location has been Nambucca Heads. You can't beat a summer afternoon here.

If you could pick any van to travel in, which van would it be?

The world is your oyster when travelling around in the van, right? Apart from my bike (of course), I reckon this is the best way to get around and see the world. My next big goal is to rent a Mercedes Benz, high-top, long-wheelbase Sprinter from the team at Camplify. Having a van that you can fully stand up in and move around would be neat. That would be epic.

Be sure to catch Lance Russell and the Freestyle kings performing at a show near you soon. Stay connected with Boost Mobile and see the show online.
