Exploring Exmouth: Western Australia's coastal paradise

Camplify
Turquoise water meets red cliffs at Exmouth. 4WD and rooftop tent setup for a WA coastal camping adventure.

For year-round delights and home to an abundance of activities, Exmouth is a special place that can't be missed. Think clear blue waters, an abundance of wildlife, and plenty of road trip goodness.

About Exmouth

One of Australia’s (and we think the world’s) best-kept secrets, Exmouth is a 13-hour drive or a short 1.5-hour flight away from major western Australian city Perth. But trust us - it's worth the visit!

This small town is packed with everything you could want from a holiday destination and we have a complete guide to 10 awesome things to do in Exmouth during your next visit. So read on adventure-folk, this is a good one!

Take a dip with the Whale Sharks

Whale sharks are a must-see

Did you know that Whale Sharks are the largest fish in the ocean? The best time to see these gentle giants in their natural habitat is between April and August each year. Drop into the ocean and snorkel alongside these placid animals as they make their way up and down the coast. Depending on the time of year you might strike lucky and see other marine life such as Manta-rays, turtles, dolphins, and more. With a trained Marine Biologist on board, this unique experience will live with you forever. We highly recommend placing this activity at the top of your Exmouth to-do list. You won’t regret it.

Visit the Exmouth Navy Pier

It's what's underneath the pier that you'll want to see

The ocean adventures continue and this time at one of the best dive sites in Australia. Reserved for those who like to strap on a scuba tank, sorry no snorkelling allowed here but for good reason. The Navy Pier is one of the best jetty dives in the world and this 300m long pier is just waiting to be explored. For an aquarium-like experience, without the glass, you will find at least 200 different species of fish as well as some big graceful giants down below. The dive site is a photographer's dream and can be dived during the day or the night any day of the year. 365-day adventures are what we love. Check out Dive Ningaloo for more information.

Spend a day at Bundegi Beach

A WA special- white sands/blue sea

Pristine, quiet, and long stretches of beaches peppered along this coastline will have you in relaxation mode instantly. With a boat ramp, canoeing, kayaking, and SUP’ing plus the chance to bring your fishing rods as you are permitted to recreationally fish from the shore this spot is epic, beach BBQ anyone? Don’t forget Bundegi Beach is an excellent snorkelling spot, the perfect place to spend a day of active relaxation.

The Giant Prawn

Yes, you heard it right, the Giant Prawn is one of the Exmouth attractions. The world-famous giant prawn is worthy of a snap for the gram. The large prawn is located on the road from Learmonth airport to Exmouth, symbolising the seafood factory and fresh availability of this tasty treat. The Aussies go ‘big’ and have several large things around the country that have long attracted visitors. Keep an eye out for the large whale shark in Exmouth too.

Book a Yardie Creek Boat Tour

You might even spot a crocodile!

Slow down the pace and explore the picturesque Yardie Creek on a leisurely, relaxing ride past red limestone cliffs and through the deep blue waters of the canyon. The best way to explore the gorge is on the guided boat cruised that runs twice daily. Learn all about the flora, fauna, and history of this special location and keep an eye out for the rare black-footed wallabies that frequent here.

Don’t miss Turquoise Bay

The water really living up to its name

Western Australia is often overlooked on the tourist trail down under and Camplify is here to prove why it should sit firmly on your list. Exmouth acts as the gateway to the incredibly beautiful Ningaloo Marine Park where you will find the pristine sandy beaches of Turquoise Bay. Swim out to the reef from the shoes, drift snorkel, and marvel at the fish and other marine life below. Just 50mminutes from Exmouth will land you in this paradise.

Lighthouse hunting at Vlamingh Head

One of the most popular lookouts offering fantastic views over the North West Cape and home to the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse. Arrive before the sun sets and watch as the Ningaloo reef is Sunkissed before dusk. If you are a keen whale spotter you might be lucky to catch the Humpback Whales during their annual Migration. Park up the van, prep some food, and end your day basking in the beauty of the West coast.

Fly or sail with the whales

Whale watching is always a must

The Humpback whales regularly make an appearance on this incredible stretch of coastline as they migrate and play in the Ningaloo waters. Whale watching season in Exmouth is from June to November and then comes the turtle nesting time. You are guaranteed some beautiful, unforgettable marine moments here whatever month you arrive. Year-round delights include a scenic flight over the reef or watching from the comfort of your boat, both unbeatable experiences.

Visit Cape Range National Park

Home of the Osprey at Yardie creek

Explore the natural wonders and canyons in this national park. In stark contrast to the beautiful blue waters on the coast, the rugged red gorges and limestone range are a whole new adventure. The park covers over 50 hectares of land and is located just 40 kilometres from Exmouth. You will find excellent walking and hiking trails here alongside spectacular outback adventures.

With year-round activities on offer, Exmouth is an adventure, beach, and marine lovers paradise. With very few restrictions on what month to visit you this place should sit high on your Australian road trip bucket list.
