Home to some of the most spectacular National Parks in the country, Tasmania is a haven for trail running. Whether you're a seasoned explorer or just finding your feet, there are plenty of routes to explore.

We caught up with trail runner and writer Josh Lynott to hear about his recent trip to the land down under. Keep reading to find out his top 3 trails, and how you can incorporate more active adventures into your holiday plans!

Was this your first visit to Tassie? If so, what did you think?

This was my third time to Tassie now. Each time I return to Tasmania I become more aware of how beautiful and special it is. I am continually blown away by the landscapes of Tasmania, each time I go, I leave with a longer list of places I want to visit, trails I want to run, and peaks I want to climb.

Tasmania has elements that are rugged and wild, yet it is filled with hidden gems and places to get cozy. I think this is what I enjoy most, the duality of being on a mountain peak and by evening, sitting next to a roaring fire.

What were your 3 favourite trails from your trip?

During this visit, I was able to explore parts of Tasmania that I hadn't been to before! I split my time between Mt. Field National park and Bruny Island.

New to trail running? Check out Josh's top 3 tips for beginner trail runners .

1. Three Falls Circuit - Mt. Field

A great track to do in Mt. Field was the 'Three Falls Circuit - you can connect a bunch of waterfalls and also run through the towering Eucalypts. If you want to hike later, you can head up and out to Lake Seal Lookout, I only scratched the surface. The trail network through Mt Field seemed expansive, maybe I'll have to go back for more.

2. Fluted Cape Track - Bruny Island

It's a little steep with a pinchy climb, but it's well worth it at the top. You can also run along the roads and towards the lighthouse if you're after something a little easier.

3. Cradle Mountain Summit via Crater Lake - Cradle Mountain

I didn't get to Cradle Mountain this time around but the summit track is a fantastic route for more experienced runners. It's an 18km return around Crater Lake with a hard climb at the summit of Cradle Mountain itself. The views from the summit are spectacular and well worth the climb!

What’s your best piece of advice for someone wanting to have more active adventures but unsure how or where to start?

1. Put a timeframe on your adventure.

Book a flight, organise a date with friends or tell your friends you have a van organised with Camplify in Tasmania is the best and most enjoyable way to start.

Action needs a deadline, so make yourself a timeline for the adventures you wish to go on. Once the deadline is set, let all your actions start to work for and towards that goal or adventure.

This might look like, telling a friend you're going on a weekend away hiking. Maybe they'll want to join or will let you borrow some gear. There are closed doors waiting to be open, opportunity awaits.

2. Start Slow and Small

If you have the time but the adventure itself scares you, just like trail running, start slow and start small.

There is something you learn from every adventure you go on. Something that you could have done better, the gear you should have taken, an outfit you should have worn, or an important item you really wish you packed.

3. Create a little adventure journal for yourself.

Here are some cues:

  • Where do you want to go?

  • What was the best part about today's adventure?

  • One thing I could have packed or organised better?

  • What snacks/nutrition did I take and how did it make my body feel?

  • I'm looking forward to

  • An interesting conversation I had on the trail today was..
