Best time to visit; make the most of your Tasmania motorhome hire

Tasmania is a unique island state with a temperate climate perfect for year-round outdoor activities. That's why it's one of our favourite destinations for road tripping and camping in a caravan, campervan or motorhome hire.

Spring (September-November) is the ideal time to see Cradle Mountain’s wildflowers bloom and visit the vineyards as the grapes begin to ripen. One of the most popular attractions is Tasmanian Devil Park, where you can see these unique animals up close. Don't miss Mount Wellington either during your camper hire in Tasmania, where you can experience the snow in spring.

In summer (December-February) visitors come to enjoy the warm weather and long days. Hiking and cycling are popular activities at this time, but if you want to cool off with swimming and surfing, head to Seven Mile Beach near Hobart, one of the island's most popular beaches.

Autumn (March-May) brings cooler temperatures and stunning foliage, making it the perfect time for hikes and drives through the countryside. Winter (June-August) is quieter, but there are still plenty of things to do, including skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating. No matter what time of year you visit Tasmania, you're sure to find plenty of activities to keep you busy.

Camper motorhome and van hire in Tasmania: Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the questions most frequently asked by our customers. If you don't find the answer you are looking for or need more information, please have a look at our help section.

How to hire a campervan, motorhome or caravan in Tasmania?

Once you have chosen a van, select your dates and send a booking request to the owner and discuss your trip. Once the owner approves your booking you can make a secure payment via our platform.

When the first day of the booking arrives you'll meet with the owner to pick-up the van (some owners will also drop-off to your holiday location). They'll guide you through using the van and submit a pre-condition report to our platform.  On return, they submit a post-hire condition report as part of the handover.

How much does it cost to hire a caravan in Tasmania?

Prices for motorhomes and campervans in Tasmania typically range from $60 to $350 per day. Prices are set by the owner and tend to vary depending on how far in advance you book, the time of year, the type of van you choose and its features (beds, kitchen, amenities, etc.).

How long do you need to caravan around Tasmania?

14 days is the minimum time you need to caravan around Tasmania to ensure you see the most popular sights. 7 to 14 days is enough to travel through the top national parks and towns. A full month will give you more time to see different attractions, take hikes and relax on some of the state’s best beaches. If you only have 2 to 3 days, like a weekend, you can plan accordingly to see top destinations, such as Hobart and surrounding areas, like Coles Bay, Launceston, Devenport and Cradle Mountain.

Are Tasmanian roads suitable for caravans?

While the main motorways and larger downs are ideal for caravans in Tasmania, some of the mountains can be very steep and the coast drives very narrow. Before you leave on a trip to Tasmania in a caravan, it’s best to research the areas you’ll be travelling through and to plan accordingly.

How old do I have to be to hire a van in Tasmania?

Licensed drivers must be between 21 and 85 years of age and hold a full and valid licence that is not subject to any restrictions or conditions. Probationary licence holders and learner drivers are not accepted.

What’s required to hire or drive a van in Tasmania?

To hire a motorhome or campervan in Tasmania, a full and valid driver's licence is required. According to the Government of Tasmania, if you're visiting the state, “You can drive in Tasmania on your overseas licence if you are a visitor or hold a temporary Australian visa”, subject to the following conditions:

  • drive only the class of motor vehicle authorised on that licence

  • comply with your licence conditions (if any)

  • show your licence to a police officer when asked to do so.
