Skip the servo, catch the train: car-free camping in NSW with a Camplify van delivered to your site

Train platform with camping gear and backpack, morning light, Blue Mountains NSW

Australia is at Level 2 of the National Fuel Security Plan – "Keep Australia Moving." The fuel excise has been halved to 20.6 cents a litre until June. The government's telling us to drive less. All sensible stuff – but for anyone who loves getting out camping on weekends, "just drive less" isn't exactly a plan.

So here's one that actually is: catch a train from Sydney to one of NSW's best campsites, and have a local Camplify owner deliver a van right to the campground. You skip the drive entirely. The owner barely burns any fuel because they're already nearby. And you step off the platform into a weekend that's ready to roll – no fuel bill, no towing stress, no dry servos to worry about.

NSW's train network lines up surprisingly well with some genuinely good camping spots. And we've got RV owners based right near each one.

Blue Mountains: step off the train, step into the bush

The Blue Mountains line is hands-down the best car-free camping corridor in Australia. Trains run from Sydney Central every 30 minutes, and about two hours later you're surrounded by eucalyptus, sandstone cliffs, and some of the finest bushwalking in the country.

Blackheath Glen Tourist Park – 1km from the station

Blackheath Glen is a 10-minute walk through beautiful parks from Blackheath Railway Station. Powered and unpowered sites, cabins, showers, and a camp kitchen – all set beside the trickling waters of Pope's Glen with kookaburras for your morning alarm. Blackheath village and its excellent cafes are just up the road.

Katoomba Falls Tourist Park – 2km from the station

A slightly longer walk from Katoomba station, but you're rewarded with a campground right on the clifftop. Bushwalks lead from the front gate to spectacular viewpoints and hidden waterfalls. Echo Point and the Three Sisters are a short stroll away.

The local delivery angle: We've got around 6 owners in Springwood, 5 in Katoomba, 3 in Lawson, 2 in Blackheath, 2 in Lithgow, and 1 right in Medlow Bath itself. A Camplify owner could deliver a campervan to Camp Medlow burning barely a few litres – some are literally driving down the road. Penrith and the lower Mountains add even more: plenty of vehicles across Penrith, Emu Plains, and Cranebrook.

Kiama: beachfront camping, 10 minutes from the platform

Campervan at a beachfront campsite with coastal views, Kiama NSW

The South Coast line runs direct from Sydney Central to Kiama – about two hours of coastal scenery and one of the most pleasant train rides in the state. Step off at Kiama station and the Surf Beach Holiday Park is a 5-10 minute walk away. Station to the beach, no car needed.

Surf Beach Holiday Park sits on a headland between Surf Beach and Kendalls Beach, with powered tent and caravan sites, a resort-style pool, camp kitchen, and cabins. Kiama's cafes, the famous Blowhole, and the start of the Kiama Coast Walk to Gerringong are all within walking distance.

The local delivery angle: This is where it gets properly interesting. There's a strong cluster of Camplify owners right along the Illawarra coast – in Kiama itself, Gerringong, Wollongong, Bulli, Thirroul, and Albion Park Rail. A Kiama-based owner delivering to Surf Beach is driving five minutes. Even from Wollongong, it's a 25-minute trip. That's a fraction of the fuel cost compared to towing from Sydney.

You catch the train, stroll to the campground with your bag, and the van's already there waiting. No towing stress, no fuel bill, no parking a tow vehicle. And you can have a wine on the train – try doing that while towing.

Newcastle: train + light rail + ferry = beach camping

This one involves a fun multi-modal journey – and the kids will love it. Train from Sydney to Newcastle Interchange (about 2.5 hours), hop on the Newcastle Light Rail to Queens Wharf (six stops), then the Stockton Ferry across the harbour. Ferries run every 15-20 minutes, all covered by your Opal card.

On the Stockton side, NRMA Stockton Beach Holiday Park is tucked against the Stockton Bight Sand Dunes – the largest moving coastal dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. Camping and caravan sites sit metres from the beach, with cabins and a camp kitchen. It's a proper adventure base.

The local delivery angle: Newcastle has one of the strongest owner communities on the platform – spread across Newcastle, Merewether, Charlestown, Belmont, and Stockton itself. A Stockton-based owner delivering to the holiday park is barely leaving their suburb. The light rail and ferry crossing are genuinely part of the fun – the Newcastle harbourfront is beautiful and there's a cracking playground near the Stockton terminal for families.

Why this works right now

For hirers

  • Zero fuel costs getting to the campsite – Sydney to Kiama is about $9 on Opal

  • No towing stress, no parking a tow vehicle, no worrying about dry servos

  • The van's set up and waiting when you arrive

  • You can have a wine on the train – try doing that while towing

For owners

  • Short local deliveries mean minimal fuel burn – critical right now

  • Competitive delivery fees because the run is so short

  • Opens up hirers who don't have a tow vehicle or just don't want to drive

  • Multiple deliveries per weekend become viable when you're driving 10-20 minutes each way

How to make it happen

  1. Pick your campsite from the options above and book your site

  2. Browse Camplify for vehicles near that campground – filter by location and look for owners offering delivery

  3. Book the van and arrange delivery to the campground for your arrival time

  4. Catch the train from Sydney with just your clothes and food

  5. Walk to your campsite where the van's set up and ready

The train does the heavy lifting, and a nearby owner handles the last few kilometres. It's smarter camping for tighter times. And honestly? The train ride through the Blue Mountains or down the South Coast might end up being one of the highlights of your trip.
