Safety and Policies: Learn about hiring regulations

Camplify

Hiring regulations vary by state. Understanding the rules that apply to you helps keep your hiring compliant and protects your business.

State-specific considerations

Tasmania: Tasmania has Hire and Drive requirements under state transport law. If you're hiring out a motorhome or campervan in Tasmania, check with Service Tasmania to see if you need to comply with additional requirements.

Western Australia: Pay attention to your vehicle's registration class. Some WA registration categories have restrictions on commercial use, including rental/hire. Make sure your van's registration permits hiring before listing.

NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, ACT, NT: No specific hire-and-drive licensing is typically required for peer-to-peer RV sharing, but you must maintain current registration and ensure the vehicle is roadworthy.

Tow vehicle regulations

If hirers will be towing your caravan or camper trailer:

  • The hirer must have the correct licence class for the combined vehicle weight

  • The tow vehicle must meet the minimum tow rating for your van

  • Safety chains, breakaway cables, and appropriate hitch couplings are required

  • Different states may have specific requirements for tow vehicle/trailer combinations

Clearly state tow vehicle requirements in your listing to help hirers ensure they're compliant.
