There's no doubt about it, New South Wales is a mecca for natural swimming holes, and when it comes to finding off-the-beaten-track, wild places to swim we are spoiled for choice in this state.
There is nothing quite like the refreshing waters of a natural swimming hole. Think waterfalls, lagoons, lakes, and rivers NSW is peppered with goodness. Swimming holes are a destination in their own right and these wild places open up a world of adventure for folks who love exploring the outdoors.

1.Figure 8-Pool - Sydney Royal National Park

A must-see on any NSW adventure, the figure of 8 pools have proven their popularity over the past few years, and for good reason. Formally two sinkholes that merged to create the perfect figure of 8, landscapes and outdoor photographers rejoice at the natural symmetry. Located on a rock ledge to the south of Sydney Royal National Park it's no easy feat to reach them.
Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and take care as you scramble from the bush down to the ocean. You can only see the pools at low tide, so be sure to factor that into your schedule.
Clarence Dam - Clarence
Cool freshwater, cliff jumps, and a fun rope swing, we would say this is one of the best swimming spots in the whole country. You will find Clarence Dam just off the Bells Line of road near Clarence in NSW.
It is the perfect place for a family dip, complete with a smaller swimming area for the nippers. The water is cool and deep perfect for those brave enough to tackle the cliff jumping.
3. Gerringong Falls - Kangaroo Valley
You may have seen photos from this epic location after all who isn't dreaming about gorgeous swimming holes, under towering cliffs surrounded by native bush?
Located in Budderoo National Park, you will need a sense of adventure for these falls. The hike involves a combination of the Budderoo Track and Hersey Fire Trail, just shy of 10km hiking will lead you to the top of the falls and epic viewpoints.
If you are prepared, daring, and ready for the challenge you can hike down to the base of the falls but be very careful, it's no easy task.
4. Bogey Hole, Newcastle

Another Instagrammer's dream and it’s right here in Newcastle, NSW. This ocean pool is a must-do while frequenting the Newcastle coastline.
You will find this swimming delight at the foot of Shepard’s Hill in King Edwards park, it is believed to be the oldest surviving European construction in Newcastle. Its setting is truly beautiful, nestled into the cliff edge with coastal views that look straight out to the horizon.
Visiting in a big swell? Be sure to hang on to the railings if you are in the pool. Sunrise & sunset are popular times to visit for those who are handy with a camera.
5. Karloo Pools - Royal National Park
Looking for an escape from the city? The Karloo Pools are just a short one-hour drive from Sydney CBD. It’s no secret, but it’s popular for good reason. The deep, cool, emerald waters are inviting and exciting.
If you can picture yourself surrounded by picturesque bushland and calming nature sounds then it’s time to pack up and hit the road for a natural escape away from the big smoke. Be prepared for a short hike to this natural oasis, but we promise the reward is worth it.
6. Scouts Falls – Coffs Harbour
All good bush tracks lead to the best destinations, right? Scouts Falls is no exception. Get off the beaten track and take a short unmaintained trail down to one of Coffs Harbours finest natural attractions. This swimming hole provides crystal clear waters for swimming, waterfalls, and a mini-adventure to reach your destination.

7. Nellies Glen – Katoomba

Are you looking for a little day trip and a place to stretch your legs? Nellies Glen near Katoomba provides exactly that. Soak up the sun while being soothed by the sounds of nearby waterfalls and take a dip surrounded by magnificent eucalyptus forests.
Enclosed by vegetation, you will truly feel at peace in this beautiful part of NSW bushland. The pool is big enough to swim in and even has a shallow end for the little ones.
8. Angourie Blue Pools – Yamba

Yamba bringing up the rear for swimming hole goodness but sometimes it is worth leaving one of the best till last. Once a rock quarry turned dazzling blue freshwater spring, we humans lucked out with this one.
The blue and green waters of the pools are inviting and attract a flock of swimming hole enthusiasts every year. Revel in the daredevil and cliff jump or simply soak away the day after your 10km hike to reach the pools.
