Are you heading to Western Australia? We're sharing all the must-dos during your stay at Lake Argyle Resort & Caravan Park, plus what time of the year is best and why this campsite needs to be a bucket list destination.

Lake Argyle Resort infinity pool view. Person enjoying the pool overlooking lake and hills. Upon arrival, you'll immediately understand the buzz of this place. Situated in the northeast of WA, near the Northern Territory border, Lake Argyle is Australia's second-largest artificial lake. Remarkable blue water against the dry brown and red rock makes it a paradise for those who love freshwater.

Get ready to embark on an epic adventure and take your campervan to one of the coolest campsites in the entire country, one your kids will be talking about for years to come.

Welcome to Lake Argyle

Lake Argyle stretches across 1,000 square kilometres and is so large it can be seen from space! The Miriwoong Gajerrong people are the traditional owners of this land, and this massive reservoir is an essential part of the Kimberely region wetlands. Formed in the 1970s thanks to the building of the Ord River Dam, it has since become a sanctuary for native fish and some 25,000 freshwater crocodiles. It is also home to numerous bays, beaches, and islands, all worth exploring during your trip.

But enough about the lake, let's chat about this bucket list resort.

Lake Argyle

The resort

Lake Argyle Resort offers it all. You will find budget-friendly non-powered and powered sites to Lakeview villas that sleep up to eight people. Everyone has access to the resort's picturesque infinity pool. Swim and lounge on the ledge overlooking the rocky mountains and make sure to catch a sunrise or sunset from this heavenly spot. A dip in the spa pool is perfect for those cooler "winter" nights when you can gaze at the million stars above. The resort also has a cafe and restaurant, open all week long, and a general store that serves snacks, cold drinks, and even petrol.

The campervan park charges $19.50 per adult and $9.50 for kiddos 3 to 15 years old, and an extra $12 for a powered site fee. On top of access to the amenities above, the park has laundry facilities, BBQ set-ups, and a camp kitchen.

You can also book several activities through the front desk. Please keep reading to find out what we recommend!

Stay for a night, or a week

When to visit?

When should you book a trip to this unique spot in WA? In this part of Australia, the seasons are made up of wet and dry climates. The good news is that it's warm all year round, but if you come in the wet season (October to March), be prepared for monsoon-type rain and closed roads. Yet, the extra rainfall does bring beauty in the form of waterfalls, gorges, and mesmerising thunder and lightning storms. If you are visiting during this time, check the roads before heading that way.

Otherwise, the locals advise visiting from April to September during the dry season. However, this is the busy season, and it's best to book ahead, especially from June to August, the region's peak months for travellers.

What to do while you're there?

When planning a campervan adventure to the resort, you are spoilt for choice with activity. Here are a few activities we know you'll love.

1. Cruise the lake

Getting on a boat to experience the magic of Lake Argyle is a must for all visitors. Choose an explorer lunch cruise or enjoy a sunset cruise, both offering a fun day on the water that even includes a swim.

2. Fly high

To gain a bird's eye perspective of this beautiful region, book one of the scenic flights. The seaplane tour flies over the unique Bungle Bungle rock formations, plus it takes you to a secluded island. If you're looking for a shorter tour experience, book a helicopter flight; either way, you won't be disappointed.

Go for a plane ride over the lake.

3. Foodie fans

You can make two unique choices from Lake Argyle Resort for those looking for land activities to fill your belly. Book 'A Taste of the Ord Valley' where you'll enjoy a unique take on morning tea while learning about the region. Another option is the 'Gourmet Camp Oven Experience,' a three-course dinner from a private lookout where you can watch the sun dip below the mountains followed by the starry night sky.

4. Water sports

Keen to swim with crocs? We are joking, of course! Your guides will take you to safe spots for swimming, but if you're up for scuba diving, canoeing, kayaks, or stand-up paddleboarding, these are all epic options. Mountain biking, bushwalks, and fishing are also very popular, and for the competitive folks, you can watch or take part in adventure races at certain times of the year.

Time for a dip!
