How to list your van: Rules, laws, and tax

Camplify

Hiring your van through Camplify has some legal and tax implications you should understand.

Tax obligations

Income earned from hiring your van on Camplify is assessable income. You'll need to declare it in your tax return. The good news is that you may be able to claim deductions for expenses related to hiring — cleaning costs, maintenance, insurance, depreciation, and your Camplify membership fees.

From 2026, Camplify is required to report owner income information to the ATO under sharing economy reporting rules. This includes your identity details, the registration number of your RV, gross income earned, and relevant deductions like fees, commission, and GST.

GST: Most individual van owners won't need to register for GST unless their total business turnover (from all sources) exceeds $75,000 per year. If you do need to register, your hire fees, service fee, and other charges must be GST-inclusive.

We strongly recommend speaking to a tax professional who understands the sharing economy to make sure you're meeting your obligations and maximising your deductions.

State and territory regulations

Hiring rules can vary depending on where your RV is based. Ensure you comply with your local transport authority before listing:

  • Tasmania: If you hire out a vehicle (including motorhomes and campervans) in Tasmania, you may need to comply with Hire and Drive requirements under Tasmanian transport law. Check with Service Tasmania for the latest requirements.

  • Western Australia: Pay attention to registration class requirements. Some RV registration categories may have restrictions on commercial hire use.

  • New Zealand: NZ has specific requirements for rental vehicle operators. Depending on your setup, you may need a Transport Service Licence or meet certain vehicle inspection standards. Check with Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency) for the latest guidance.

Tow vehicle requirements

If you're listing a caravan or camper trailer, make sure your listing clearly states the tow vehicle requirements — minimum tow rating, braked vs unbraked weight, and any licence class requirements. Hirers are responsible for ensuring their tow vehicle is suitable, but providing clear information upfront helps everyone.

Camplify Terms of Service

As an owner, you agree to Camplify's Terms of Service, Owner Rules, and Community Rules. These cover your obligations around listing accuracy, safety standards, cancellation policies, and conduct. Familiarise yourself with these — they're there to protect you, your hirers, and the wider community.
