With the recent loosening of COVID-19 travel restrictions in Western Australia, the WA government has lifted a ban on camping and begun the re-opening of National Parks. That is providing you don’t travel outside of your designated region as the ban on intrastate travel without an exemption is still in place.
So in anticipation of National Parks, caravan parks and camping grounds preparing to open, we would like to prepare you with our picks for the best family camping destinations in the Perth and Peel intrastate region.

Bald Hill Camp at Avon Valley National Park
Distance from Perth City: 84km
Drive time: ~1.5hrs
Bald Hill Camp is a brilliant campsite situated in the breathtaking Avon Valley National Park.
The Avon Valley National Park region has an abundance of native tree forests including Powder Bark, Jarrah, and Marri, however, the actual valley is forested by Wandoo and is a great place for a nice relaxing hike at any time of the year.
You’ll find the Bald Hill campground at the summit of Bald Hill, which provides you with panoramic views of the entire Avon Valley National Park.
Bald Hill campground has tent sites, picnic tables, fire pits, toilets and untreated water. Small caravans and campervans are most suited as all the access roads within the park are unsealed. Also, if you are looking to visit the river, pack your hiking boots because there is no vehicle access to it.
Campfires are usually permitted between 1 April and 30 November but fire restrictions may be imposed at any time and without notice. Bring your own firewood.
Banksia Tourist Park
Distance from Perth City: 24km
Drive time: ~30min
** For the families that have a keen interest in hiking and mountain biking, the Banksia Tourist Park is nestled right under the Perth Foothills, giving you prime position for adventure only half an hour from the centre of Perth.
With things to see such as the Swan Valley, Bickley Valley and Lesmurdie Falls, you’ll also find no shortage of activities in the Perth Observatory and the Zig-Zag walking trail.
This fully equipped holiday park offers a huge range of options including ensuite sites, drive-through and even dog-friendly sites so your furry family members aren’t left confused at you leaving the house all among a gorgeous native garden setting.
The park features a huge cafe-style camp kitchen to try out all the new camping recipes you’ve been reading about in your spare time. Their facilities also include an undercover playground, huge grassy areas, a dog walking area and a pool.
If you’re looking for a place to explore the Perth hills and wineries within a limited range of the city, then this is the spot for you.
Stringers Camp at Lane Poole Reserve
Distance from Perth City: 107km
Drive time: ~1.5hrs
Still within the Lane Poole Reserves Jarrah Forest, Stringers camp is just over 100km from Perth near Dwellingup. The (Western Australian) Murray River flows through the reserve and with it comes multiple options of activities from white-water rafting to swimming, canoeing etc. For the keen hikers out there, the Lane Poole Reserve also forms part of the Bibbulmun Track, a famous 1000km hike stretching from Perth to Denmark on the States South Coast.
Stringer's Camp is one of the many campgrounds sat right on the Murray River within Lane Poole Reserve.
Stringer's only has six small campsites intended mainly for families and not intended for large groups, perfect for social distancing, although it means you might not get a space right away, so have a backup plan. In that case, or if you are adventuring in a larger vehicle, it might be better to try finding a spot at Nanga Mill or Baden Powell instead.
The campground has barbecue pits for the camping stove, picnic tables, toilets and rubbish bins.
Henry White Yanchep Campground

Henry White Oval is nestled in Tuart and Banksia woodlands and is the perfect campground for families.
Consisting of nine hardstand sites, 10 grass sites, group camping area, entry roadway, Dump Ezy disposal point, old renovated ablution block, brand new ablution block, new barbecue shelter area for those classic camping meals and a communal fire-pit (depending on fire-restrictions) there really isn’t much more you could ask for.
There is a huge abundance of wildlife to see in and around the campground, and with various bushwalks and other activities, you won’t have any trouble staying entertained.
Perth Hills Centre Campground at Beelu National Park

If you’re looking for a short weekend getaway, Perth Hills Centre campground is open for public camping every Friday and Saturday night and every night of the week during Western Australia school holidays. The rest of the time it is used exclusively for school camps.
The campground comes complete with hot showers and kitchen facilities and perfect for families and anyone who wants to get away for a walk into the fabulous forest environment of Beelu National Park.
Facilities include Barbeque, Camp Kitchen, Communal Refrigerator and a Communal Shower.
Mandurah Caravan and Tourist Park

Mandurah Caravan and Tourist Park is the ultimate family park. The kids will love the large pool and playground while you love some time to yourself.
With a range of large shady caravan, camping and private en suite camping sites plus an accommodatingly large communal kitchen to gather together for some camp cooking and brag about the catch of the day.
The park also provides you with a communal refrigerator, communal shower, gas, laundry, non-smoking sites, outdoor dining area, outdoor furniture, and is also pet friendly providing you enquire in advance.
They offer family-friendly facilities with kids activities and is also a great spot for some fishing, cycling, animal watching and swimming.
