James is named after the infamous Tasmanian Bushranger James McCabe. Born in Ireland in 1804 James was transported to Van Diemen's Land as a teenager, convicted of theft. He escaped custody while still very young and took to the bush. He was one of the youngest bushrangers to gain notoriety in Tasmania. James (the van) now offers the freedom to explore Tasmania the way it's meant to be seen! This professionally converted Hi-Top Toyota HiAce is reliable, economical and set up for comfortable off grid free camping. With 5 x seat belts and 4 x berths, it suits up to 4 x people, though it is most comfortable for 2-3 x adults or 2 x adults and 2 x kids. The high roof gives great internal space with full standing room and the automatic transmission makes driving a breeze. Just imagine the freedom James gives you: Wake up by the ocean, chase the weather, explore historic sites & World Heritage National parks, explore the towns and cities. Take Tasmania at your own pace, just choose your view and enjoy the moment!

Additional information

James has an internal standing height of 190cm. The roof bed is a small double, and the main bed is full queen size, so even tall people will be comfortable. Unlimited kilometres within Tasmania. We recommend using a powered site every third night to completely recharge Jame's house battery.

Hiring rules

  • Report any accidents within 24hrs of the event.
  • Please, No smoking within 3 metres of the van
  • Travel on dirt roads is limited to 12kms max, only to allow access to National Parks and recognised camping areas.
  • Please return the van clean, inside and outside, and remove all rubbish we will look after the linen.
  • Enjoy Tasmania and have the best holiday!
  • Hirer must be 21 years of age or older.

Cancellations

Strict

  • Cancel earlier than 45 days before the start of the booking and receive a full credit. Refunds available upon request (less any admin fees) and may take up to 30 days to process.
  • Cancel between 45 and 20 days before the start of booking and receive a 90% credit. Booking fees will not be credited.
  • Cancellations less than 20 days before the start of booking will not be eligible for any credit or refund.

    James the Van was the perfect choice for our 6 day Tassie trip. A great drive and has all the right things for an easy journey. Martyn was a great host and genuinely wanted us to have the greatest trip- which we did!

    We had the most amazing holiday. This is surely the best way to see Tasmania. We were so lucky to find Martyns van for the week. It was so well set up, comfortable, reliable. We were a party of three adults and were very comfortable. Martyns communication was excellent, we felt very well looked after. I would highly highly recommend booking with martyn if visiting Tassie, and we would 100% book this van again if coming back!!

    Perfect from start to finish. Martyn was a wonderful host, excellent communication from the moment I booked, until the moment he very kindly dropped me back at the airport. My van James had absolutely everything I needed (Martyn had even left me some chocolate biscuits in the fridge, which was a lovely touch). The van was the perfect size for my trip around Tasmania, big enough to feel spacious during the day and night, but not too big to worry about getting it parked or driving it around Tassie roads. Would definitely book again, was one of my best trips to date. Thank you Martyn (and James!)
