Best destinations to visit with campervan rental in Hobart

As Tasmania’s capital city, Hobart offers so much to see and do in your campervan rental. Whether it’s a weekend away or a week-long exploration of your own backyard, these are some of the must-see destinations to add to your bucket list.

Mt. Wellington

Jump in your van and head 25-minutes west to Mt. Wellington (Kunanyi), where you can walk, ride mountain bikes and get involved in nature. You may even see snow during winter. It’s also a prime location to watch the sunrise or sunset over Hobart before heading off to uncover Tasmania.

Russell Falls

If you’re taking the Western route too or from Hobart, Russell Falls is an absolute unmissable Tassie sight to add to your caravan adventure. It’s only a 20-minute round-trip walk from the car park, so it’s a quick stopover, but the stunning forest and falls are well worth it. For something different, come at night to see the glow worms in the vegetation.

Mount Amos

Up along the east coast of Tasmania, 2 and a half hours north of Hobart is Mount Amos. The 3.6km track is considered a challenging trip and takes about 3 hours return, but the view from the granite mountains (the Hazards) over panoramic views of Coles Bay and Freycinet National Park are breathtaking. Get some more tips for taking the climb.

Mount Field National Park

Keep driving further past Russell Falls and find yourself at Mount Field National Park. As one of Tasmania’s oldest national parks, you’re in for a treat, with some of the world’s tallest eucalypt forests, alpine vegetation and even ski slopes during the winter, as well as some of the top walking trails in Tasmania. If you keep an eye out, you may even spy a wombat, platypus, eastern barred bandicoot, echidna or the famous Tasmanian devil.

Macquarie Plains

Macquarie Plains is a great camping spot in Tasmania to be immersed in nature. The Ryelands Farm & Vineyard is located directly on the River Derwent, where you can see platypus, sea eagles and black swans. You can also fish for brown trout and rainbow trout (with a licence, of course), or challenge yourself on the grade one or two rapids in a kayak. Plus, you have the benefit of a vineyard being right at your (caravan) backdoor.

Hobart

Of course, there is Hobart itself. In the town itself, you can explore the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Hobart Penitentiary, Cascades Female Factory Historic Site and many other exhibits, galleries and historic spots. You can also head out to Port Arthur for a full-day guided tour, with a cruise stopover of Tasman National Park. Whether it’s a starting point or your end location, Hobart is a great place to explore.
