Best destinations to visit with motorhome hire in Darwin

While Darwin may be well known for its ‘Red Centre’ and outback, there’s so much more to this beautiful city and beyond. There are many national parks, gorges, beaches and other destinations to explore with your campervan hire in Darwin.

Darwin City

Deciding whether to hang around Darwin or get on your way? This is one destination you want to spend some time in with so many activities for all ages. To start, there’s the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and Darwin Military Museum for a bit of art and history. Then, there’s Crocosaurus Cove, where you can visit a crocodile as you’re dipped into its habitat in an enclosure. There’s also the Crocodylus Park, Darwin Wave Lagoon, Mindil Beach and so many other places to see and explore.

Litchfield National Park

About an hour and a half outside of Darwin is the Litchfield National Park; a tropical paradise in the desert. Take your choice of one of the walking trails, waterfalls and swimming holes, or simply find a peak to watch the sun set. The best time to visit Litchfield National Park tends to be in the dry season (May to October), as roads in and out of the park often close during the wet season.

Uluru

An Uluru road trip is something everyone should experience. As one of the world’s largest rocks at 348m high, it’s one of Australia’s most easily recognised landmarks. It’s been around for an estimated 550 million years, attracting millions of visitors every year. Peak season is during the dry season in April to October, when there is low rainfall and clear skies. This is when you will definitely want to plan your accommodation well in advance, even your spots at caravan parks.

Kakadu National Park

Kakadu National Park and the main township of Jabiru are one of the most popular Northern Territory road trip destinations. Most sites within the park are easily reached with 2WD, including Nourlangie Rock, World-Heritage listed ancient Aboriginal rock art (Ubirr Aboriginal rock art), and more. There’s a caravan park onsite, with more than 200 spots, but this can get busy during the peak dry season, so plan accordingly.

Katherine

If you’ve ever wanted to see a tropical oasis, then Katherine is an NT destination to add to your list. Known as ‘where the Outback meets the tropics’, there are days worth of places and activities to see and do, including the thermal hot springs, ancient gorges, Cutta Cutta underground caverns, waterfalls and more. It’s also your gateway to the Nitmiluk National Park and Elsey National Park, so you can make a stop along the way to other locations.

Kings Canyon

No road trip from Darwin or through the Northern Territory is complete without visiting Kings Canyon. There are many walking trails, water holes and even the Garden of Eden through the canyon to explore. There is also unique wildlife to keep an eye out for, including red kangaroos, desert dingos, thorny devils, emus, bilbies and more.
