Perth to Esperance: 7 spots you can’t miss

Pick up your campervan in Perth and gear up for an incredible road trip across WA’s southwest. Here are Hayley and Kyle’s top spots to visit on your Perth to Esperance road trip:

1. Margaret River

Start your journey in the iconic Margaret River region. First, visit the popular Indijup Natural Spa for a refreshing dip before exploring Conto Beach.

For an authentic bush-to-beach experience, stay the night at Conto Campground. Bookings are essential!

2. Denmark

From Margaret River, make the scenic four hour drive to the charming town of Denmark. Be sure to stop for a dip at the incredible Elephant Rocks and the Greens Pool, two of WA’s most iconic beaches.

BIG4 Denmark Ocean Beach Holiday Park is an ideal place to set up camp for the night. The park is situated just a short drive from the town of Denmark - an ideal base for exploring these coastal attractions.

With thousands of kilometres of pristine coastline, you'll quickly discover there's no shortage of world-class beaches in Western Australia.

3. Albany

As you continue along the coast, don't miss a stop in Albany and stay at one of the free beach campsites here, which have stunning ocean views - a perfect place to pause and unwind after a day of driving or exploring.

As you get closer to Esperance, head to Wylie Bay for a spectacular sunset and enjoy a picnic dinner.

4. Esperance

Next, make the town of Esperance your base camp. From here, you can easily explore nearby beaches like the famous Twilight Beach. While in town, be sure to grab a pastry from Bread Local, a local bakery only open from Thursdays to Saturdays.

What to look for in your dream WA road trip van

With vast distances between towns and rugged landscapes to navigate, choosing the right van is crucial. Here’s what to look for to ensure your van is perfectly equipped for exploring the best of the west.

  • Capability is key:WA’s most incredible spots are often found at the end of a long, dusty track so your road trip van needs to be able to handle it. Look for a vehicle with off-road capability and high ground clearance to navigate sandy tracks and unsealed roads with ease.

  • Embrace self-contained, off-grid living:Many of the best campsites in Western Australia are free, but they come with limited or no facilities. To unlock this incredible network of off-grid spots, your van needs to be fully self-contained.

  • Consider booking a van with a rooftop tent:Rooftop tents provide a quick and easy sleeping solution that keeps you off the ground and away from unwelcome critters. This setup is perfect for day-to-day touring as it frees up valuable living and storage space inside the van. Waking up to a panoramic view of the sunrise from your elevated perch is an experience that can’t be beaten, and the quick pack-down means you’re ready to hit the road and chase the next adventure in no time.
